THE
HOMESHARING
PROGRAM

Imagine living affordably in a way that builds community and bridges difference. In our program, older Homeowners are connected with a responsible young tenant — and may be eligible for assistance to repair their homes. Younger Homesharers pay reduced rent in exchange for agreed upon help around the home. Together, Homeowners and Homesharers participate in arts workshops, building trust and communication through shared stories. Read on to see if you're eligible.

  • As members of Second Story Collective, you are invited to monthly public arts programming with Writers Room — writing and storytelling workshops that build trust across difference. Second Story homes are also offered customized arts programming, designed to meet individual schedules and needs.

  • Rent will vary from home to home, and depend on the space being rented, the Homeowner's needs, and the balance of the Homesharer's responsibilities. Pairs of Homeowners and Homesharers may decide to reduce rent, in exchange for agreed-upon responsibilities in the home. With each home, the goal is to reduce housing costs for long term Mantua residents and offer more affordable housing options to students/recent graduates.

  • Eligible West Philadelphia Promise Zone residents can receive up to $25,000 in home repairs and renovations, to make the home more accessible and age-friendly. Rebuilding Together Philadelphia works with the resident and Drexel architecture faculty to identify repairs and changes that will help you stay in your homes as you age. If you do not own your home but meet other criteria, you may still be eligible if your landlord is willing to participate. To be eligible for this program, the homeowner/resident must be age 55+, meet HUD income guidelines, and be willing to participate in feedback and arts programming sessions.

  • Absolutely! If you have a room, apartment, or an accessory dwelling unit in your house that you would like to rent to a responsible young tenant, and want to share space and stories, then we'd love to hear from you.

  • The West Philadelphia Promise Zone (WPPZ) was one of four first-round designations declared in January 2014 and is now one of twenty-two Promise Zones that serve urban, rural, and tribal areas across the country.

The WPPZ is roughly two square miles with well-defined boundaries: the Schuylkill River to the east, 48th Street to the west, Girard Avenue to the north, and Sansom Street to the south. These bounds fully or partially encompass ten neighborhoods: Belmont, East Parkside, Mantua, Mill Creek, Powelton Village, Saunders Park, Spruce Hill, West Powelton Village, Walnut Hill, and University City.
